Ms.Price
Thurs., Sept. 20th
CBC Archives has a number of video clips on Al Purdy available.
YOUR TASK: Listen/Watch the clips in the order that they are listed! On one sheet of paper, keep a list of any poems of his that are referred to. On another page, write the title of the clip, click on the "cite" button and record the information to cite the clip. On that same page, take notes about Al Purdy and his poetry from that same clip.
After you finish watching the clips, pick one of the poems that were referred to or find an Al Purdy poem on your own and write a 1-2 page commentary on that poem, making connections to the audio/video clips. Please cite the book or website that you found the poem on. The library has poetry books on Al Purdy. If you can find the poem in a book, that is a more credible source than a website.
DUE: Monday, Sept. 22nd
Watch the following clips in this order:
A Difficult Beginning (13:27) (This one is long - but I want you to hear his voice and the manner in which he speaks)
At the Quinte Hotel (4:23)
Concerning Ms.Atwood (2:22)
Reaching for the Beaucroft Sea (8:20)
Remembering Al (15:02)
Mourning Al Purdy (3:04)

Also, view the video below! Why? Becuase you are enlightened, educated individuals and not everything has to be for marks! And because I said so.
AT THE QUINTE HOTEL
Read along with your copy of "At the Quinte Hotel" by Al Purdy and watch the following video featuring Gord Downie from the Tragically Hip and a voiceover from Al Purdy.
ASSIGNMENT:
Name: ______________________________
Date: _______________________________
Course Code: _________________________
The following poets are cited as having influenced Al Purdy, are influenced by Al Purdy, or considered to be his contemporaries in the arena of Canadian poetry.
You are to choose two poems and conduct a comparative analysis. One poem will be by Al Purdy; the other poem will be by one of the poets listed below. Your essay should conclude with an original, affirmative opinion of Al Purdy’s poem
Your comparison should focus on the poems and not on the biographies of the poets – though knowing biographical information on your poets will enrich your understanding of their poems. Your main focus should be poetic devices and content.
Your essay should be four (4) to six (6) pages, typed and double-spaced and include copies of each of the poems you use:
Bliss Carmen
Charles G.D. Roberts
Archibald Lampman
Duncan Campbell Scott
D.H. Lawrence
Dylan Thomas
Irving Layton
Milton Acorn
Alden Nowlan
Patrick Lane
Susan Musgrave
Margaret Atwood
Michael Ondaatje
You will need to have a works cited page for this essay, which means you will need to have books. Please have your poet approved by Ms. Price by the end of this period and take out some books from the library.
ESSAY IS DUE: ______________________________________________
